Popular Home Styles

Listed below are several popular home styles, many of which have recently been given a new twist. Check out these styles and see if your preferred style is on the list.

Craftsman – Celebrate simple beauty and attention to detail with handcrafted elements. Named for the skilled craftsmanship involved, it features millwork and artisanal details.  This style emerged in the early 20th century after the Industrial Revolution.

Victorian – Romantic and slightly mysterious, their architecture emerged during Queen Victoria’s reign (1837-1901) and was influenced by the Industrial Revolution.

Cape Cod – This style of home is usually a single story, with a low, rectangular profile. It has a side gable and a steeply-pitched roof. It can have a central chimney and dormer windows, often with shutters.

Colonial – Originally built by European settlers from the 17th to 19th centuries, are experiencing a revival. These homes feature symmetrical, rectangular design with two or three stories, central front doors, columns, and covered porches. Steeply pitched roofs, gambles, dormer windows with shutters, and chimneys. Sub-styles include Dutch, Southern, British, and French Colonial.

Ranch – These homes are traditionally favored by retirees, are now popular due to their smart use of space and lifestyle-friendly features. Open concept floor plans, wide sightlines and abundant natural light are typical with a bedroom on one end and the rest on the opposite side.

Additional Home Styles

Farm – Beloved for its idyllic charm, there are two sub-styles: Traditional Farmhouse which is laid-back and relies on natural patina, and Modern Farmhouse, which leans towards minimalism with trendy materials. Historically built with readily available materials, they use warm woods and natural stone with open-concept floor plans, exposed beams, shiplap natural light and high ceilings.

Art Deco – While Art Deco home exteriors are not popular, interiors are due to their support for maximalism. Originating in the 1920’s and 1930’s, Art Deco spread from France to the U.S. and Europe, reflecting the opulence of the roaring 20’s. The style emphasizes symmetry, dramatic shapes and jewel-toned colors.

Mediterranean – Emphasize indoor-outdoor living with reginal variations. Design elements include exposed beams, brick with natural patina, intricate ceilings and terracotta flooring, patterned tiles and natural stone. Style favors curves in facades and archways, with stucco exteriors, clay roof tiles and lush landscaping.

Patio – This style of home typically has a connecting wall between homes. It is no more than one and half stories tall. Patio homes can share amenities rather than walls. This is what you will find at Spruce Point.
