Around and About Colorado

Silverton, Colorado

The town of Silverton is located south of Cobble Creek. It is a National Historic Landmark in the San Juan Mountains. It was established in 1874 when some mining entrepreneurs founded the Sunnyside Silver Mine and the railroad laid tracks through it. Gold was later discovered which strengthened the town during hard times. The area boomed and became the center hub of several mining camps lasting through 1910.

In 1913, the Silverton Commercial Club was established to promote tourism in the area. Mining continued but began to decline and railroad lines were slowly shut down as outlying mining camps emptied. Silverton grew in popularity in the 30’s and 40′ with Hollywood studios using the railroad to film Westerns. By the late 70’s the train line from Durango to Silverton carried more than 120,000 passengers per year. People came to enjoy the history of the town and to ride the train along its narrow winding trail.

Today, the Million Dollar Highway connects Silverton to Ouray. People come from all over to climb seven of Colorado’s most famous 14,000-foot peaks all within 15 miles. The area is popular for year-round activities.

About Montrose

The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad company laid down narrow tracks between Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver Colorado in 1882.  The tracks traveled through Montrose making it an excellent way station.  In 1890 additional tracks were added to connect to Grand Junction, Ouray and Salida.  All these tracks combined to make Montrose a commerce hub of the San Juans.  It continues to be an adventure gateway to the area today.
