Around and About Colorado

Gunnison, Colorado

Located near Montrose, Gunnison is a small mountain community with a lot of outdoor activities available. The area is known for ranching, mining, tourism and agriculture. The town is small but swells in size with students attending the university there and with tourism. The drive from Montrose to the town of Gunnison is winding but beautiful.

Gunnison is named after John W. Gunnison, who was looking for a path for the transcontinental railroad. The area was known to fur trappers and mountain men and later by miners looking for mining possibilities in the area. All these groups passed through, and area wasn’t settled until later when farmers and ranchers, moved in seeing the potential of the valley.

Outdoor Activities near Gunnison – Curecanti National  Recreation Area

Located near the town of Gunnison, are three reservoirs along the Gunnison River. These reservoirs are a water-based destination in the Rocky Mountains. They offer a variety of outdoor recreational activities like boating, camping, hiking, fishing and bird watching to name a few. Salmon and Trout are the most popular fish found in the reservoirs, but many other freshwater fish live there also.

The area offers many outdoor winter activities including alpine skiing, ski mountaineering, and snowboarding. Ice fishing or ice skating on one of the nearby reservoirs is popular. Plan to go tubing down a local hill or snowshoeing on one of the many local hiking trails are also good examples of things to do. Of course, you can always sit by a warm fire with a great book and enjoy its adventure if you don’t enjoy the weather.

About Montrose

Montrose became a town in 1882. It was named after Sir Water Scott’s novel, The Legend of Montrose. At that time the Denver Rio Grande Railroad was building out west and Montrose became a regional shipping area for the railroad to come through.

Today it is considered an economic, labor and transportation waypoint for the recreational activities. Montrose continues to be the gateway to many outdoor activities.
