About Montrose

Evidence of humans have been found to be living in the Montrose/Uncompahgre Valley area dating back to 1000 BC or earlier. They created petroglyph art on the rocks now known as the Shavano Valley Rock Art Site. Their descendants continued the tradition by adding to the art until 1881 AD. Through the petroglyphs, we not only understand their cultural events, but also their artistic style of expression. This area is listed on the Colorado State Register and National Register of Historic Places.
