Around and About Colorado

Telluride, Colorado

South of Montrose about an hour and a half is the small town of Telluride, which has a rich history.  The area was used as a summer camp for centuries by the Ute Indians and was named by Spanish explorers in the 1700s.  The first mining claim (Sheridan Mine) in the area, lead to the establishment of a tent camp in the valley below.    A melting pot of immigrants seeking their fortunes turned Telluride into a thriving community of 5,000.  When silver prices crashed in 1893, followed by the First World War, the mining boom collapsed.  The town’s population gradually dwindled.  In the 1970s the town reinvented itself opening Telluride Ski Resort in 1972.  This sparked a resurgence in the community and new possibilities.

Today, Telluride is known for its world-class skiing and stunning ambiance.  The town is tucked into a box canyon surrounded by peaks-13,000 and 14,000 foot high.  Due to its significant role in the history of the American West, the core area of the town was designated a National Historic Landmark District.  This area is eight blocks wide and twelve blocks long.  Here you will find colorful Victorian-era homes, and historic buildings which have been turned into boutiques, art galleries, gourmet restaurants and luxury hotels.

Outdoor Activities near Telluride – Box Springs Falls

A wealth of outdoor adventures and scenic wonders to explore year-round are near Telluride.  Hiking enthusiasts will revel in the vast network of trails, each providing breathtaking vistas of the San Juan Mountains.  Box Springs Falls is a hidden gem on the one of the trails, perfect for a tranquil escape and enjoying the soothing sounds of cascading water.  When the snow blankets the landscape, Telluride transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders.  Whether you’re hiking through pristine wilderness, chasing waterfalls, or carving your way down snowy slopes, Telluride is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

About Montrose

Montrose showcases a captivating blend of architectural heritage that reflects its unique history. The city’s historic downtown is a treasure trove of well-preserved buildings, offering a charming glimpse into its past. However, a lesser-known architectural feature lies beneath the surface-a network of tunnels, often hidden from plain view, were constructed during the Prohibition era. They served various purposes, including smuggling of illicit substances and as secret passages for escape. While these subterranean structures remain largely concealed, they add a mysterious layer to Montrose’s architectural narrative, reminding us of a bygone era of secrecy and intrigue beneath the city streets.
