Outdoor Activities near Durango – Mesa Verde National Monument 

Mesa Verde National Monument is an amazing National and UNESCO World Heritage Park dating its inhabitants back to 7500 B.C.  Located near Durango, it is a remarkable testament to the ancient civilizations that once thrived here.  Its towering sandstone cliffs and rocky landscapes are home to a vast collection of well-preserved ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings, showcasing the architectural ingenuity and cultural complexity of its previous inhabitants.  These indigenous communities, often referred to as the Ancestral Puebloans or Anasazi, inhabited the area for over 700 years, from around 600 AD to 1300 AD. This area encompasses over 52,000 miles with 600 cliff dwellings and 5,000 sites are a marvel of ancient engineering.  It also provides valuable insights into the lives, traditions and societal structure of these early Native American people.  For this reason, this makes it a captivating destination for archaeologists, historians and above all, tourists.

About Montrose

The Ute Indians have a deep-rooted history in the region near Montrose, Colorado.  For generations, they inhabited and nurtured a deep relationship with the land and its resources.  The Ute people’s traditional way of life, including hunting, gathering, and cultural practices, was intricately tied to the natural rhythms of the area’s diverse ecosystems.  They were renowned for their adaptability and resilience in navigating diverse landscapes found near Montrose.

The Ute Indian Museum was originally built in 1956 near the ranch of Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta. The museum works with representatives of the Ute Tribe, to ensure Ute life and culture are appropriately represented in the building’s layout and exhibit content. It is important to connect the past with current Ute culture through an understanding of various influences including geography, politics and economics.

Today, the museum, Ute Indian tribes and scientists are working together to explore the integration of Western science, engineering and math with Ute traditional ecological knowledge. The project includes field work, programs, exhibits and films now spanning over 20 years in efforts.

2023 FUNC (Fun on the Uncompahgre River) FESTIVAL – Riverbottom Park – This family friendly event celebrates the river running next to the town.  Enjoy a full schedule of water sports competitions, live music, activities for the whole family, local vendors, food trucks, and a beer garden.  Musicians will perform throughout the day so bring your own lawn chairs or blankets.  Come dressed in a funky costume and enjoy yourself with other colorful river folk.

MONTE de ROSA FIESTA – La Raza Park – This Festival includes live entertainment, kids zone including bounce houses, free prizes, beer tent, food trucks, activities for all and much more.

LADIES NIGHT – LaNoue DuBois Winery – Theme: Hat Night – Every third Friday through the summer we will be hosting Ladies night.  Each will have a different theme in which you can participate or not.  Wear your favorite hat or stop by the Vintners room and design one.

MONTROSE SUMMER MUSIC SERIES – Montrose Rotary Amphitheater – Attend a series of FREE concerts featuring a variety of performers on the first Friday of each month.

MONTROSE FARMERS MARKET – Join the community in purchasing local produce and products made here.  Recurring on Saturdays all year round.
